On October 16, 2015, a veteran of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a dedicated historian, tireless archivist and traveler, a prominent researcher of Russian-Chinese relations and Russian Sinology, senior researcher, Candidate of Historical Sciences A. N. Khokhlov1 died after a serious illness.
A. N. Khokhlov was born in Tomsk in a poor large family (6 children) of a construction worker. Having lost his father early and the worries of a sick mother, being brought up in an orphanage from the age of 4 to 17, he got used to overcoming difficulties and hard work from childhood. Despite the severity of personal circumstances and the atmosphere of the Soviet province in the terrible 1930s-1940s, Alexander Nikolaevich, like a real Siberian nugget, strove with all his might for culture and showed himself in various fields of it. He studied music, played the piano and accordion, and in 1941 became a pupil-flutist in the music platoon of the regimental school. During the war, he studied with G. M. Rimsky-Korsakov (1901-1965), an original composer, theorist of quarter-tone music and grandson of the famous representative of the Mighty Bunch.
In 1946, A. N. Khokhlov entered the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, and a year later, after passing the exams at the Faculty of History of Tomsk State University and receiving a Komsomol permit, he went to Moscow to enter MGIMO, but being late, he found himself in the Chinese department of the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies, where he studied with such famous scientists.

Sinologists like M. K. Rumyantsev (1922-2010) and T. P. Zadoenko (1924-1993). After graduating from the Institute for four years in 1951, he was sent as a translator to Mudanjiang to work on the Chinese Changchun Railway, the rights to which and the corresponding property of the USSR were transferred to the PRC at that time. After returning to his homeland in 1953, L. N. Khokhlov entered MGIMO as a graduate student, and in 1957 he became an employee of the Academic Institute of Sinology and the Institute of Oriental Studies (in 1961). In the 1950s, he traveled the country with Chinese delegations, in particular, in 1954 he accompanied the famous writer Ba Jin (1904-2005), and in 1957 worked as a translator at the VI World Festival of Youth and Students. Arriving in the capital, Alexander Nikolaevich first lived for a year with his sister in Pushkin near Moscow, then lived in a hostel for a decade, until in 1959 he received two rooms with his wife (Z. N. Karelina) and her son from his first marriage in a communal apartment of the academic house on Vavilova Street, which he built for three years together with other employees of the Academy of Sciences THE USSR. Only after another ten years did he manage to move into a separate small apartment. In these living conditions, the family was not replenished with a new child, and the adopted son passed away 14 years earlier than the stepfather.
A. N. Khokhlov began his scientific activity under the guidance of L. I. Duman (1907-1979) with the study of land issues in the era of the decline of the Chinese Empire and in 1972 defended his PhD thesis "Codes of laws of the Qing Dynasty as a source on the agricultural history of China in the mid - XVII-early XIX centuries." Based on these studies, he was able to make a valuable contribution to such fundamental publications as The New History of China (Moscow, 1972) and the encyclopedia Spiritual Culture of China (vol.4, Moscow, 2009). Since the main legal documents on this issue were already translated by old Russian Sinologists, A. N. Khokhlov turned his irrepressible research energy to domestic archives, eventually becoming the main connoisseur of their sinological treasures. It is significant that, being a great master of small forms and not having published a single book of his own during his lifetime, before his death he completed work on the generalizing monograph " Chinese Old printed books in Russia of the XIX-XX centuries. (Public and private collections of Chinese woodcuts)", which should be published in the next volume of the "Archive of Russian Sinology".
A dedicated worker, A. N. Khokhlov, based on meticulous archival research, published hundreds of articles on the history of Russian Sinology, paying his benevolent and close attention not only to such scientific stars of the first magnitude as N. Ya. Bichurin (1777-1853), P. I. Kafarov (1817-1878) and V. P. Vasiliev (1818-1900), but also to the entire synological firmament, for all those who have made any theoretical or practical contribution to the knowledge of China. The rich scattering of his publications scattered through various publications is in fact a complete work, perfectly complementing the capital "Essays on the History of Russian Sinology" by P. E. Skachkov (1892-1964) (Moscow, 1977). Unfortunately, the author will no longer be able to see this work, which will be published as a separate book.
Having come to science on a thorny path, A. N. Khokhlov always treated his colleagues, especially young ones, with care and concern, generously sharing his extensive knowledge. For 20 years, from 1974 to 1993, he devoted time-consuming editorial work on the materials of the annual scientific conference "Society and the State in China", fruitfully contributing to the development of domestic sinology. Moreover, Alexander Nikolaevich himself became the leader of publications in the collections "Society and the State in China": in them, for 45 years, from 1971 to 2015, 60 works were published under his name. There is no doubt that the works of A. N. Khokhlov will have a long and happy life, and the bright image of this humble ascetic of Russian science will be firmly imprinted on its tablets.
