Introduction.

In late January and early February 2026, the United States Department of Justice released another unprecedented batch of documents related to the case of deceased financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In the media, this material became known as the "Epstein Files." Among millions of pages, letters, and photographs, information emerged directly implicating one of the most famous people on the planet—Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

The publication sparked a wave of discussion and forced the 70-year-old billionaire into an unprecedented public revision of his own past. In late February 2026, Gates gathered employees of his charitable foundation for a closed meeting where he made a series of sensational admissions concerning his connections with Epstein and his personal life.

I. Chronology of Acquaintance: From Philanthropic Hopes to Reputational Trap.

Bill Gates met Jeffrey Epstein in 2011—three years after Epstein was convicted of procuring a minor for prostitution and had served a prison sentence. According to Gates himself, he knew about certain "18-month restrictions" concerning Epstein but failed to properly investigate his biography.

Gates's motives were explained by pragmatic considerations: Epstein possessed extensive connections in the world of the super-wealthy, including Wall Street financiers, and convinced Gates that he could attract billion-dollar donations for global philanthropic projects supported by the Gates Foundation.

Over three years—from 2011 to 2014—Gates met with Epstein, flew on his private plane, and spent time in Germany, France, New York, and Washington. However, the billionaire categorically denies ever visiting Epstein's infamous island in the US Virgin Islands or staying overnight at his residence.

Even then, these connections caused concern for Gates's wife, Melinda French Gates. In 2013, she openly expressed anxiety about her husband's association with the odious financier, yet Gates continued the contacts. As he later admitted, the presence of other influential people at meetings with Epstein created a false sense of "normalcy" about the situation.

II. Kompromat and the Blackmail Mechanism: The Russian Connection.

The real sensation, however, lay not in the meetings themselves but in the information Epstein possessed. In 2013, he sent to himself—or according to other sources, prepared to send to Gates—several emails containing information that could seriously damage the billionaire's reputation.

In these emails, Epstein claimed that Gates had extramarital affairs with women of Russian origin. Moreover, the financier alleged that he had helped Gates obtain antibiotics to treat an illness contracted after intimate relations with "Russian girls." According to the documents, Gates supposedly asked Epstein to help procure medication and inquired about how he could secretly administer it to his wife Melinda to prevent her from learning about his infidelities.

Gates himself categorically rejects these allegations. His representatives called Epstein's letters "absolutely absurd and completely false," while the billionaire himself suggested that Epstein was attempting to compromise and blackmail him.

"The fact that the letters were never sent, merely saved in Epstein's drafts, demonstrates only his frustration at failing to build long-term relationships with Gates and his willingness to resort to any machinations to slander a person," a Gates representative stated.

The context of these claims is significant: Epstein was trying to persuade Gates to participate in creating a multibillion-dollar charitable fund in partnership with JPMorgan Chase. The venture's success depended entirely on the Microsoft founder's participation—other wealthy individuals worldwide were expected to contribute at least 100 million dollars each, seeing Gates's name involved. When Gates refused, Epstein apparently attempted to use the information he possessed as leverage.

III. Russian Women in Bill Gates's Life.

During the February 24, 2026 meeting with foundation employees, Gates officially confirmed for the first time what had previously been merely rumors. He admitted that he indeed had extramarital affairs with two Russian women.

One of them is a bridge player, Mila Antonova, whom Gates met at tournaments around 2009-2010. Antonova, a native of Tolyatti who moved to the United States and founded her own bridge club, attempted to launch an online platform called BridgePlanet in 2013 and sought funding. It was then that Gates's advisor Boris Nikolic introduced her to Epstein. Although Epstein did not invest in the project, he later paid for Antonova's education at a programming school—a negligible sum for billionaires but sufficient to create a compromising connection.

The second woman is a nuclear physicist of Russian origin whom Gates met "through work." Her identity remains undisclosed.

Gates emphasized that neither woman was a victim of Epstein and that he himself never participated in anything illegal. Nevertheless, information about these affairs became the instrument of pressure on the billionaire.

IV. The Role of Advisor Boris Nikolic and Attempts at Pressure.

A key figure in this story emerged as Boris Nikolic—Gates's close scientific advisor. He served as the link between the Microsoft founder and Epstein. Nikolic knew about Gates's extramarital affairs and, apparently, shared this information with Epstein.

In 2013, as relations between Gates and Epstein began to cool, the latter took several steps that could be interpreted as attempted blackmail. In a July 4, 2013 letter to Nikolic, Epstein wrote: "Bill risks transforming from the richest man into the biggest hypocrite; Melinda risks becoming a laughingstock; promises of donations will vanish as a result." He then named two women with whom Gates had affairs, noting that they "risk becoming overnight sensations."

Later, in 2017, Epstein sent Gates a letter requesting reimbursement for Antonova's course fees. The amount was insignificant, but the very fact of such a letter carried an obvious subtext: Epstein was signaling that he possessed leverage.

Gates, according to his account, did not succumb to pressure and stopped responding to Epstein's letters after 2014. However, the existence of compromising material only became public knowledge years later.

V. Melinda French Gates's Reaction: "A Very Painful Period."

The publication of the Epstein Files reopened old wounds and provoked a reaction from the billionaire's former wife, Melinda French Gates, from whom Gates divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage.

In an interview with US National Public Radio, she admitted that the release of these documents forced her to relive "very, very painful times" from her marriage. "For me personally, it's very difficult when this topic resurfaces. Because it makes me recall a very painful period," she stated.

French Gates refrained from direct accusations against her ex-husband but emphasized that he must answer the questions inevitably arising from the document publication. "Whatever questions remain, and I can't even imagine all of them, those are questions for those people and even for my ex-husband. They should answer them, not me," she added.

It is known that as early as 2019, when information about Gates's connections with Epstein first reached the press, Melinda began consulting with divorce attorneys. For many analysts, this confirmed that the Epstein scandal played a significant role in the dissolution of one of the business world's most famous marriages.

VI. Gates in Context: Tech Giants in the Epstein Files.

Bill Gates proved to be far from the only celebrity from the high-tech world whose name surfaced in the published documents. The "Epstein Files" contain mentions of numerous businessmen, politicians, and public figures.

Among the tech giants appearing in the documents are:

Elon Musk, who according to correspondence discussed the possibility of visiting Epstein's island (Musk himself claims he was never there).

Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who according to documents visited the island and met with Epstein's associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, who corresponded with Epstein and received invitations to his island.

LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, whose potential visits to Epstein's properties are also documented.

Gates himself repeatedly emphasized that his connections with Epstein were limited to a few dinners and never involved criminal activity. However, mere association with the circle of people connected to the odious financier dealt a serious blow to his reputation.

Conclusion.

The story of Bill Gates and the Epstein Files represents more than just another scandalous chronicle from the lives of the rich and famous. It serves as a telling example of how personal connections, even those not involving illegal activity, can become instruments of blackmail and sources of long-term reputational problems.

Gates himself, years after his acquaintance with Epstein, finds himself forced to publicly repent and explain himself to his own foundation employees, admitting to affairs and apologizing for the "enormous mistake" of associating with a man whose name has become synonymous with sexual exploitation.

Melinda French Gates's reaction and her reluctance to defend her ex-husband only underscore the depth of the personal drama that unfolded behind the facade of an ideal family. And the very existence of compromising letters that Epstein wrote to himself, preserving them as weapons against wealthy individuals beyond his reach, paints a sinister portrait of a man who spent decades compiling dossiers on the global elite.

Bill Gates, denying the accusations and calling them absurd, nevertheless admits the main point: the very possibility of such accusations resulted from his own decisions and actions. And the price of these decisions proved immeasurably high—from a destroyed marriage to the tarnished reputation of one of modernity's greatest philanthropists.
